Recent Trends in Psychiatric Research Training

During the past 2 years I have had the opportunity of visiting 16 important psychiatric training centers. Since I have a strong interest in research training and have been intensively engaged in it since 1953, I have on each visit inquired about research training. Over-all, it has been my impression that there is considerable interest in research on the part of faculty and trainees, an increasing awareness of the need for training in research, and a feeling that such programs may be within reach in the foreseeable future; yet it has also been my impression that very little effective implementation of these views has so far taken place.

In preparing for this conference, however, I have not felt satisfied to leave these impressions at quite so haphazard a level. Therefore, I have undertaken a detailed review of the programs of 20 major American training centers
