ABSTRACT

This interesting little monograph develops an unusual theme. Choisy is evidently a Catholic but she was born and reared in Aquitaine, in the old heretical part of France and the heretical strain dies hard. Although she makes numerous protestations of loyalty to the tenets of psychoanalysis, heresy stalks through these pages. She finally was evidently accepted in orthodox psychoanalytic circles, but her didactic analysis with the heretical analyst, René Laforgue, had to be repeated with Dr. Bouvet. Her principal sin in this monograph is to offer alternative explanations—the sin for which Adler and Jung were rejected. Choisy sets out to "examine Freud's life and works from his first conception of the Death Instincts onwards, then the whole biography makes new sense . . .
