Dr. Searles is a prospector in terrain others have not found particularly productive. The valuable materials he seeks and finds are only discernible with difficulty in the hardened earth which conceals and disguises them. Like the modern miner, he does not discard the common ore but extracts from it precious metals. The sensitive instrument he uses to locate potentially rich areas are his own feelings. The refining method he employs is psychoanalytic technique—a persistent reexamination and selfanalysis of his feelings which are generated in daily transactions with his chronic schizophrenic patients.

This volume contains the partial yield of 14 years of labor: 24 papers published between 1951 and 1964, arranged in chronological order. Although reediting has been minimal (previously printed essays are referred to as chapters rather than as titles), there is a welcome internal consistency in the collection. Its coherence reflects the graduai evolution and development of Searles' ideas
