ABSTRACT

Freud and America by Hendrick M. Ruitenbeek is described on the dust cover as "an interpretive account of the arrival, impact, and special evolution of psychoanalysis in the United States—with projections for the future." This important segment of the intellectual history of the United States is unquestionably deserving of an authoritative study. Such a study could be approached from a variety of vantage points: a simple description of the objective events, personages, and ideas; a historical study in depth, perhaps utilizing psychoanalytic interpretative tools; a sociological study; or penetrating accounts of the influence of psychoanalytic ideas on the fields of law, religion, education, medicine, various social sciences, and art. Unfortunately, the author of this book has utilized all of these reference points and therefore none of them is treated in adequate depth.

In just 192 small octavo pages, Dr. Ruitenbeek offers us all the studies listed above and more.
