Although it was modestly stated in the preface of this book that it deals only with certain limited aspects of learning and memory, coverage of the more important research involving learning is rather comprehensive. The experiments cited date back to early contributions of von Bechterew, Zelin, and Pavlov, and extend to some as yet unpublished works.

This book is the product of combined efforts of seven distinguished research scientists in England. Included among them was a psychologist, a clinical neurologist, and a pathologist. Four of these authors were affiliated with the Medical Research Council Neuropsychiatric Unit at Carshalton, Surrey. Another was associated with the Medical Research Council Unit for the Experimental Investigation of Behaviour, University College, London. The Department of Neurology at the Radcliff Infirmary in Oxford, and the Institute of Animal Physiology, Babraham, Cambridge were represented by the remaining two. Although the chapters were
