ABSTRACT

Evaluation research in comprehensive community mental health services is a new field. This volume is a pioneering effort to discuss accomplishments in this area. It contains the proceedings of a round table discussion held in New York City and Poughkeepsie, NY, in April 1965. Four mental health services are described in some detail by the administrators. The attempts at evaluation in each program are then set down by the researchers. Both the program descriptions and evaluations are discussed by the total group, plus a few invited guests. Finally, there is a paper on the historical development of the social breakdown syndrome concept, which was added to the book but not discussed at the conference. (The latter refers to the recognition that many symptoms of chronic mental illness relate to the attitudes and actions of those who are around the mentally ill person.) The four
