Explorations in Typing Psychotics aims to further the goal of establishing an objective taxonomy for the behavior disorders. Syndromes of Psychosis (1963) by Lorr and co-workers was also devoted to the same purpose. Explorations is a sequel to the 1963 publication. The new monograph edited by Lorr includes the findings of a series of typing investigations, the majority of which was based on interview observations employing the same instrument, the Inpatient Multidimensional Psychiatric Scale (IMPS).
The monograph begins with a critical examination of existing psychiatric classification. First, it is well-known that diagnosticians disagree in assigning patients to specific classes and do not do too well even with broad generic classes; for example, some studies have shown considerable disagreement as between classifying schizophrenia and neurosis, qualitatively different categories. Further, under the present system there is a high proportion of unclassifiable cases.
