ABSTRACT

This book is a collection of papers and discussions presented at a conference honoring the 20th anniversary of the Columbia University Psychoanalytic Clinic. It is divided into sections on psychoanalytic theory, clinical studies, research, applied psychoanalysis, and a concluding summary. Each paper is from one or more people trained at the Columbia Institute and is followed by a discussion by an outside guest.

A review of the book is made easy since the discussions are really an ongoing commentary on the contents. An overall picture of this volume can only attest to the wide scope which some training centers assign to psychoanalysis. The influence of Rado on the training program at Columbia is quite obvious with Ovesey insisting that he can dispense with libido theory and Goldman suggesting that Rado really said much the same things as Hartmann, and much earlier as well.
