This book represents an edited version of an institute held in February 1966 at the
University of Tennessee College of Medicine. The expressed purpose of the institute was to provide "an assessment of the current status of our knowledge in the area of mental retardation, particularly with reference to brain damage." Since the problems in the area of mental retardation and brain damage are not the province of any single specialty or discipline, the institute sought contributors and discussants from not only experimental, clinical, social, and developmental psychology but also pediatric neurology, neurology, and psychiatry.
