THE JULY 1993 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry contained a sad irony for friends of the journal. That issue carried a memorial to the founding editor of the Archives, Roy R. Grinker, Sr, MD, written by his successor, Daniel X. Freedman, MD.1 In that same issue was the news that Dr Freedman had died suddenly.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of the third editor of the Archives of General Psychiatry: Jack D. Barchas, MD.
Jack David Barchas is an outstanding choice to succeed the two eminent psychiatrists who have edited the journal. A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, Dr Barchas completed his medical internship at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and his psychiatric residency at Stanford University. From 1966 to 1990 he was based at Stanford where he rose to professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, director of the
