AB Professor Joyce and his colleagues have produced a stimulating, sometimes entertaining work, the sections of which are quite disparate as to level of abstraction, but the total effect of which indicates that the entire group shares the belief that to know psychopharmacology, the psyche, the socios, and the drug must be understood in a dynamic, transactional way. Methods of psychology, pharmacology, and neuroanatomy are presented in the traditional isolated manner, but the understanding of the effect of the drug is presented in a way implying the need to know the history, setting, and interactions of the user with his environment. An exceedingly important introduction to the new and vigorous field approach to psychopharmacology, deserving of early introduction to psychiatric residents and graduate students in psychology, pharmacology, and sociology.
