AB With all of the uninformed talk about violence these days, it is refreshing to see any kind of effortto do some solid research on the subject. Dr. Toch and his collaborators have made a significant effort to examine comprehensively those factors which create violence in two types of social situations. They have examined violence as it arises in the course of a policeman's work and the violence which occurs in the restrictive and often dehumanizing environment of the prison. Dr. Toch presents the methodology of his study, his results, and his speculations in a highly readable manner. He suggests certain practices which might be used to control violence among police and among violent men in prison. These suggestions are both practical and humanistic.
