AB THE American Medical Association has specific rules concerning the time allotted for membership on committees and boards (ten years). These have been breached in my case on the basis of one rationalization or another, but the string has run out and I am being retired from my position at the end of 1969. It seems appropriate, in an editorial for this last number under my editorship, to review the history of this Archives, its changing goals, and the significant experiences of one editor, and to make some remarks about the future of psychiatry.The first volume of the Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry appeared in 1919, exactly 50 years ago, under the editorship of Drs. Hugh T. Patrick, Pearce Bailey, E.E. Southard, August Hoch, Frederick Tilney, and T. H. Weisenburg, all distinguished neuropsychiatrists. Dr. Patrick of Chicago was Chief Editor for the first three volumes;
