AB • Adults in two small Ugandan villages were interviewed, using a standard psychiatric examination and standard methods of case identification and diagnosis. Twenty percent had disorders just above threshold level, and a further 5% had more definite disorders. Most of these conditions were depressive, but hypomanic and anxiety states were also represented. A survey of women in southeast London found only half this frequency of disorders. Further studies are required to confirm these results.
