N2  - This manual, by the associate professor of mental diseases and of the brain at the University of Paris, chief physician of the national sanitarium at Saint-Maurice, is a clear and concise summary of traditional French clinical psychiatry, together with brief accounts of recent developments in that field and a description of the author’s extensive investigations in the biological, social, and moral foundations of mental disease. It is written in a lucid style which makes easy reading. There is a minimum of metapsychology, for which reason it will doubtless be accused of superficiality, especially in the U. S. A. This relative neglect of the vast superficial systems of hypotheses is due not to ignorance of them but, rather, to the author’s agreement with his distinguished predecessor, Esquirol, who wrote in the preface to his treatise on the same subject: “Clinging to the facts, I grouped them by their affinities, I described
