MacFie Campbell. This was an exciting period in American psychiatry. My Chief, who had been Adolf Meyer's first assistant before he became Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard, might be classified as a dynamic eclectic psychiatrist. He had become interested in psychoanalysis early in his career and, as a matter of fact, had written several excellent papers from this point of view as early as 1914. I was additionally fortunate in being designated as a Commonwealth Fund ResearchFellow at Harvard for a 3-year period beginning in 1928, which enabled me to go to Europe for training analysis.
