N2  - ON Nov 11, 1966, the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP) celebrated its 20th anniversary. In 1946 a group of military psychiatrists recently returned to civilian life decided to form an organization designed to put new life into the American Psychiatric Association, which had let its colleagues fight their professional battles with the military unaided and had slothfully avoided any position of real leadership. The new organization was to be neither rebellious nor a substitute for the old, but a constructive influence stimulating from within. By means of its committee organization, two yearly meetings, and continuous work at home, members of GAP studied many topical issues and published significant reports distributed and appreciated the world over. American psychiatry was stimulated and the APA was modernized, but GAP could not disband because it continues to serve important purposes that organized psychiatry cannot. It
