In doing so he has presented some helpful principles of preventive child psychiatry. As director of the center for Preventive Psychiatry in White Plains, NY, he has been interested in a therapeutic program focused on the life crises and psychological hazards of well-functioning children as well as of those already chronically handicapped. In such a program the concept of "psychological immunization" is invoked as a major preventive mode. The therapeutic efforts are directed toward reducing the defensive noncommunication between traumatized children and their parents. Free access to open communication with an interested adult is the sine quo non of such a therapeutic intervention. In the first chapter examples are given of the value of sharing life's truths with children in helping them prepare for greater stresses.
