N2  - An in-service training program consists of a psychiatric consultant conferring with a group of psychologically unsophisticated "helpers" (nurses, teachers) in a mutual effort to improve their professional aptitude. Preferring a "task-centered" approach which emphasizes specific interactions between client and worker, rather than a "workercentered" approach which focuses on the worker's psychological problems, or a "client-or-content centered" approach which uses formal case material presentation, Dr. Parker cogently presents her experience as consultant over a ten-year period to groups of visiting nurses and teachers. It is community psychiatry based on competent psychoanalytic knowledge applied to small groups. Attempts at group therapy are avoided.Because the book is of such high quality, it reads easily and rewardingly.
