N2  - In 1966, Professor Sir Aubrey Lewis retired from the directorship of the Institute of Psychiatry, the Maudsley Hospital, and from the professorship of psychiatry at the University of London. To mark this occasion, his students arranged for the republication of some of his best-known writings. The first volume contains articles on the history of psychiatry, on education, and on general issues, while the second volume is devoted to clinical and social psychiatry.Over one-fourth of the space is given over to Aubrey Lewis' by now classic essays on melancholia, which perhaps constitute his most enduring contribution to clinical psychiatry. Another one-fourth of the content have been reserved for Lewis' pioneer work in social psychiatry. In 1935 he published his first article on "Neurosis and Unemployment," and in 1943 his "Social Causes of Admissions to a Mental Hospital for the Aged" appeared. In some ways the
