Dr. Toch and his collaborators have made a significant effort to examine comprehensively those factors which create violence in two types of social situations. They have examined violence as it arises in the course of a policeman's work and the violence which occurs in the restrictive and often dehumanizing environment of the prison. Dr. Toch presents the methodology of his study, his results, and his speculations in a highly readable manner. He suggests certain practices which might be used to control violence among police and among violent men in prison. These suggestions are both practical and humanistic.
