The present volume extends from the Greek classical period and ends with William James. The technique is simple: to quote from the authors themselves (this is the editing function, ably helped by Professor Richard P. McKeon of the University of Chicago for the Greek psychology) and to offer interpretative material so that the reader may gain a perspective on the relationship of each author to his culture and to the field of psychology (this is the creative function of the authors).
