N2  - Nathan Leites, professor of political science at the University of Chicago and a long-time resident of France, in this book explores the French character, especially as it manifests itself in politics. Although a description of the political behavior of the French may not interest the psychiatrist, the formulation of the rules that govern their behavior may. Says the author, if "such and such a feeling (or belief, or type of behavior) has manifested itself with such and such a frequency within such and such a group of people at such and such a period" then we can talk about the rules of the game. And in effect the psychiatrist uses this approach when he tries to understand and predict the behavior of people suffering from compulsions, addictions, phobias, and similar conditions.
