    The Addictions Research Institute of the State of Illinois has been studying patients successfully maintained with methadone for the past year to learn if they can maintain stability in a medical maintenance model in which they have 2week take-home privileges, one counseling session per month, and one medical review per month plus random urine screenings. Eligibility for the study is determined by the presence of a minimum 6-month period of drugfree urine samples, no legal problems, employment or filling a homemaker or student role, and a good record for treatment compliance. Most of the subjects in this study have had such records extending over many years.In the course of this study, informed consent was obtained from 95 subjects to test for the presence of antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) on a blind basis.
