      <description>&lt;span class="paragraphSection"&gt;IN THIS issue, Penninx et al report the results of a longitudinal study of depression as a risk factor for cardiac mortality in elderly, community-dwelling residents of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. This study joins a growing number of methodologically sound investigations showing that depression increases the risk of cardiac mortality, yet some fundamental questions remain about depression as a cardiovascular risk factor. Their study addresses 2 such questions that have both mechanistic and clinical relevance.&lt;/span&gt;</description>
